Before WWII, Owasso’s population stayed around a few hundred people, and as the veterans returned home, the aircraft industry developed, primarily at the Tulsa Airport on the south side of Owasso. Along with other industries related to the aircraft industries, families began arriving in Owasso and between 1950 to 1970, the population increased.
In the past 15 years, rapid growth has become normal for this city with over 33,000 residents counted in the 2014 census, making Owasso on of Oklahoma’s fastest growing cities. Located just north of Tulsa with easy access from Highway 75 and Highway 169, what was once a small community now has what it takes to serve the 700,000 residents of the state.
The weather in Oklahoma is known for its “Tornado Alley” and Owasso is in that area. But the temperatures year round make it worth the short spring time scared of tornados. With an average of 9 inches of that white stuff in the winter and less than 39 inches of rain and 93 as the average high temperature, and winters low hitting 26 degrees, most people find Owasso a comfortable climate.
The wide assortment of businesses & services make Owasso a good place; to call home. There is the weekly newspaper and the Owasso Library. The Historical Museum provides a taste of cultural and education, and Gundy’s Airport serves those with private aircraft.
There are several assisted living center, nursing homes, and retirement complexes. And jobs are all about with the many different industries that call Owasso home. Like the industrial and manufacturing businesses and American Airlines is right here in Owasso, making it the city’s largest employer.
West of Owasso is the Cherokee Industrial Park where companies like Bama Foods, Capital One, and Laufin International Tile are set up. There is also Nordam, Ryerson Steel, Sabre, and the Whirlpool Manufacturing plant as well as Verizon. On the East side of Owasso is the Port of Catoosa, where more than 4,000 are employed.
Owasso is a family friendly community that has charm and character many seek to raise their families. With plenty of convenient restaurants, shopping and plenty of recreation both indoor and outdoor, there is no doubt why more people are heading to Owasso.
